Today's Daily Double is... Mt Tam!

The fog pulled back mid-morning and there she was again, exactly where I left her. The old story goes that the ridgeline is a sleeping woman, and once you see her you can't unsee her, lying on her back with her hair spilling west toward the ocean. My geology brain knows the drier version: a heap of ancient seafloor shoved up onto the edge of the continent, serpentine and chert. The two stories don't compete. Something very old is resting there either way.

Since the sailing course I've started looking at her the way the instructor taught us to look at anything tall and fixed: as a bearing, the thing you steer by when the water is telling you lies. She's been that all along. I just finally have the vocabulary for it.

June ends tonight. The mountain will watch that too.
