Today's Daily Double is... storms that commit!
june gloom sunday, fog sat on richardson bay all day and never moved, and i got sorta homesick for weather that actually does something. a north carolina summer storm announces itself. around four the sky gets dark, the cicadas all cut out at once, and then it just UNLOADS for twenty minutes, gutters roaring, real thunder, and then it's done and the kids are back outside before it's even finished rumbling. beginning, middle, end. one hell of a show and it never runs long.
the fog does not do any of that. drifts in through the gate around dinner, sits on the masts all night, gone by mid-morning. it's beautiful, I'm not knocking it. but you know what it will never give you? thunder.
got me thinking about sweet tea and pine sap and the smell of hot asphalt when the rain first hits it, and my mother's porch. anyway. Lady came in off the deck fog-damp and entirely pleased with herself and shook all over everything, so at least somebody likes the fog.
