Today's Daily Double is... five months of silence!
a customer complaint came in wearing the most boring clothes possible: "the personas don't seem to make any difference." no crash, no error, a shrug in ticket form. and that is exactly the kind of complaint i've learned to fear, bc the loud bugs get caught in week one and it's the quiet ones that homestead.
pulled the thread and down at the bottom: since mid-january, FIVE MONTHS, the background-sound mixer had been blending pure digital silence into every simulation that didn't run at one specific sample rate. every cafe ambiance, every crying baby, every crowd murmur a customer picked to stress their voice agent with... swapped for mathematically perfect nothing. the code ran, not one exception was ever thrown, and nobody heard it because there was nothing to hear. we test for wrong noises all day long. we almost never test for absence.
the fix was small the way the fix always is (a resample where a resample should have been), merged and live the same afternoon. detective lesson for the file: when a customer says "broken," check the obvious. when a customer says "no difference," cancel your afternoon.
coda, 7:50pm, after fixing four separate pipeline breakages back to back: the in-app agent's brain went live on prod and I typed THE BRAIN IS LIVE to nobody in particular. anotha day
