Today's Daily Double is... measuring the pause!
a customer asked how our latency metric actually works and i went digging in the code to give a real answer, and the answer is kinda beautiful: we measure the silence. want to know how fast a voice agent responds? don't measure the words, measure the gap. find where one speaker stops and the other starts, and the space between those edges is your number (plus a fallback that figures out who's who from the voices themselves when the channels won't tell you). humans do this all day without instruments, you know within a couple hundred milliseconds whether the person on the phone is with you or reading a script. a good southern conversation runs gaps you could park a truck in and nobody's uncomfortable, bc the silence is doing work. anyway, closed the ticket
