Today's Daily Double is... nine silent phone calls!
overslept and missed the early ferry, which turned out fine bc it bought me a vanilla latte, a cheese croissant, and some quality yapping with my favorite ferryman. also porpoises off the bow, three or four of em rolling through the flat water. second cetacean event of the week!
then work turned into a detective novel. a customer on the far side of the world ran a batch of simulated calls and nine out of twenty-five came back silent. no words, no audio, just dead air dutifully transcribed as dead air. silent calls are a pain in the ass to debug precisely bc nothing fails, the call connects, everything reports success, the recording exists and it is a flawless recording of nothing. so you dig. pulled logs off faraway boxes, did our side speak? yes. did our side listen? yes, patiently, the whole time. was there anything on the wire to hear?..... no. the carrier had delivered zero audio frames, literally zero, and our software sat there politely listening to a vacuum nine separate times without thinking to mention it. the fix was the easy part, route around it, swap carriers, ship it, and we timed the deploy to land during daytime on their side of the planet, which is the detail i like best.
people ask what i do all day and some days the honest answer is i find out why the silence was silent. the porpoises don't care. told em anyway on the ride home
