Today's Daily Double is... being the outage!

Up at 5:15 with a sleep score of 99, biked out, got halfway down the road, realized I forgot the thing, went back for the thing, biked out again. My hands filed their usual complaint at the desk. Every year I type less and talk more and they still keep receipts.

But here is the actual story of today. Usually I am the detective. Some customer's runs go sideways and I show up with the magnifying glass and find the culprit. Today I was the culprit. Merged the wideband audio work in the morning, demoed it, felt tall. Then a fix I had gated to specific orgs turned out to gate wrong, backed up the worker queue, and broke real customers' simulations while I sat there feeling tall. And because the universe likes a theme, the evening brought a second incident, workers just gone, and a root cause call at 7pm on a crime scene I had decorated myself that morning.

Every engineer carries a little map of the system with themselves drawn outside it. Observer, fixer, adult in the room. Then one gated flag with your name on it reminds you that you are a component too, with an error rate, and today mine was nonzero and other people paid it.

Biked to the ferry in the dark. Hands sore, pride sore, queue drained. Tomorrow I will be the detective again.
