Today's Daily Double is... a line of pelicans!

Light rain on the commute this morning and then the sky started showing off. A full rainbow first, then a mass swarm of cormorants boiling low and black over the water, and then, no lie, THOUSANDS of pelicans in one unbroken line, wingtip after wingtip after wingtip clear to the horizon. Stood there with an australian guy I'd never met and we just talked birds. You don't get that every commute.

work had its own migration: we finally rolled everything back to the old model powering the simulated callers. weeks of patches and guards and prompt surgery, and the wisest engineering move on the board was retreat. no shame in a rollback (ok, a little). and freed from the doomed frontend approach, i pivoted the metrics work to custom metrics with scheduled runs and dashboards, and when a customer asked for histograms i built the thing in like thirty minutes, which is radddd. the wrong path fights you for weeks, the right one falls out of your hands.

started the sailing book on the bus home. chapter one, points of sail. turns out you can't sail straight into the wind, you tack, you zigzag, you get there anyway. good chapter
