Today's Daily Double is... DAY ONE!
6:30 ferry out past all the sleeping boats, city all lit up ahead, new job day. first day jitters on black water with a thermos.
the place, from ten thousand feet bc that's how we do it around here: a small shop that tests voice agents by siccing other voice agents on them. fleets of simulated phone calls, robots interviewing robots, scores rolling in. which is to say they built a whole company out of the exact weird intersection i've been living at for years. i walked in grinning.
day one went like day ones go. laptop, wifi, standup, saying my own name to a room. then a solid hour of python being a pain in the ass, the machine wanted 3.14, the code wanted 3.12, guess how that went? pyenv sorted em out eventually like it always does. traced how jobs flow through the queues and drew myself a lil map. by late afternoon I had a scrappy test voice agent stood up and pointed the platform at it and ran my first batch of evals, and watching that grid light up with simulated callers grilling my dumb little agent..... i said "ayo. it works" out loud at my new desk. it's very neat. i've built a lot of things that talk, and watching a system find out whether the talking is any GOOD scratches an itch i've had since the trivia game years.
also got my first commit merged. day one! tiny thing but it's in there.
lesson of the day came from a bluetooth keyboard that would NOT pair no matter what i did, til i plugged it in with a cable and it worked instantly and forever. when the wireless dream is eating your afternoon, use the wire.
evening boat home. al asked how it was before i had both feet in the door. lady checked me for the smells of other dogs and found me clean. anotha day, anotha dollar
